About CS3

Here at AquaTerra Coaching, LLC, we have gotten sick of the term “Strength and Conditioning” within the realm of multisports. It comes with so much baggage. It’s a perfectly appropriate term for most other sports, but for triathlon, we felt a shift of focus was in order to be able to truly understand what strength training for endurance athletes is all about.

CS3 is our new name for Strength and Conditioning. It stands for: Conditioning for Sports Specific Strength. Due to the fact that triathletes already do an inordinate amount of training in three sports (any one of which requires a fairly high degree of strength; all three combined really ups the ante), to just go into the gym and “pick heavy things up and put them down” may not actually be beneficial, especially if it’s not part of a carefully calibrated and individualized training plan. At worst, it could be the cause of serious injury.

While lifting heavy things does indeed have its place in triathlon training, a VERY careful build towards “heavy” (what constitutes “heavy” is highly individualistic and context driven) is required. The best way to get there is a strong, solid stable core, 360 degrees around the body, and by learning how joint position dictates muscle function. In order to swim, bike and run as fast as possible for as long as possible, you need to have a solid foundation in order to achieve maximum propulsion. As the saying goes, you don’t want to fire a cannon from a canoe.

We can show you how it’s done, safely, and in a way so that you don’t exhaust yourself in the process.
